AQSAzine: Muslim Women and Non-Binary People Zine Collective
AQSAzine
AQSAzine: A Grassroots Publication for Creative Resistance
AQSAzine was an online and print series of grassroots publications that showcased the art, poetry, and prose of young Muslim women and trans people aged 16-35. The zines challenge the monolithic portrayals of Islam and Muslims in Western media by providing a platform for creative self-expression, offering perspectives often marginalized or silenced. With a global range of contributors, the content spans personal reflections, political commentaries, and artistic expressions that weave together complex stories, histories, and visions for the future.
The name "AQSA" originates from the Arabic meaning word "the furthest possible point," signifying the project's aim to motivate profound resistance to all forms of oppression. AQSAzine was created for Muslim women and transpeople, giving them a space to voice their experiences and respond to the stereotypical and biased portrayals of Muslims that pervade mainstream media.
Though our collective was based in Canada, AQSAzine welcomed submissions worldwide. Each issue sought to connect Muslim creatives through storytelling and art, fostering a sense of community and collective resistance. The publications are intended for anyone with an open mind and heart willing to engage with the lived experiences and multifaceted identities of Muslim women and trans people.
